Interior Themes

Ethnic

Ethnic style is very bright, dynamic, lively and original. It impresses with its scale, the riot of colors and original decor. It recreates culture & tradition in its own way. Variations of ethnic style: African style (which includes Moroccan and Egyptian), European (Provence, Mediterranean and Colonial), Eastern (Indian, Chinese and Japanese), South American or Mexican.

Contemporary

Contemporary refers to decor that is much more current. Contemporary interiors feature tone-on-tone colour palettes relying heavily on brown, taupe, cream and pure white. Shots of colour are sometimes found on a single wall, on a striking floor rug or in a special piece of art. Pieces feature clean lines and smooth surfaces without any carving or adornment. Silhouettes are slim without being dainty.

Furniture is made of light-coloured woods such as maple and birch (which also have minimal graining), frosted or clear glass, stainless steel, nickel and chrome. Natural fabrics such as silk, wool, linen and cotton are used for their textural aspect and inherent neutral hues. However, bold colours or geometric patterns may be brought into the design with pillows, a rug or a throw.

The lighting design is used as an artistic statement in a contemporary interior. Floor and table lamps have straight lines and sleek metallic finishes; colour might be introduced with a special shade.

Bohemian

Bohemian decorating is for those who want their homes full of life, culture, and interesting items for all the world to see. It embraces the carefree, relaxed and unusual decor. There are no rules when it comes to bohemian decorating, yet warm earthy colours are quite common, as are metallic.

Bohemian rooms tend to be full of furniture collected over time. Second-hand and vintage items are right at home in these rooms. Shapes and sizes aren’t nearly as important as they are in other styles of rooms. Each piece should be special and tell a story no matter what it looks like. No one should be able to walk into a bohemian room and be able to tell where you got the furniture.

Rustic

The rustic interior design creates a look that emphasizes nature: homespun, time-worn, handcrafted, distressed items, constructed of natural materials or finished in a natural hue. Rustic interior design furniture normally consists of wood, reclaimed lumber, and stone. However, bamboo, rattan, sisal, nubby cotton, wool, paper, glass, clay and various types of metal can also be incorporated to embellish the look. Heirlooms, flea market finds, DIY projects, folk art, collections, found items and vintage pieces coexist well in rustic decor, providing contrasting textures, patterns and colours. Metal-worked furniture is another great option to use with this concept. The rustic look features wooden beams and columns as well as hardwood or stone flooring. If you don’t have these elements in your home, you can put up faux beams or columns to achieve the look.

Eclectic

Eclectic style borrows various styles while creating a cohesive look through colour, patterns, texture and shape. Typical characteristics of an eclectic style space are a calm mix of periods and styles with smartly used neutral background colours. There is always unexpected use of materials and items with uniqueness in art and furnishings. Everything has its place but it may look cluttered with a mixture of Old and new. This style also uses handmade items or items with sentimental value with quite a lot of contrasts.

Shabby-Chic

Shabby Chic interior design presents a soft, feminine feel that differentiates this look from other vintage styles. It is a uniquely romantic way of decorating that first originated in the 1980s in the United Kingdom.

Shabby Chic interior design consists of furnishings that are either chosen for their appearance of age and signs of wear and tear, or where new items are distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique. At the same time, a soft, opulent, yet cottage-style decor, often with an affected feel is emphasized to differentiate it from the genuine period decor. Shabby Chic furnishings show signs of wear and distressed, time-worn and painted layers. Fabrics tend to be cotton and old French linens. Whites and pastels are my favourite colours. Popular décor items are pillows made of vintage fabrics, vintage linens, chenille bedspreads, vintage chandeliers, and anything with roses on it.

Architecture Themes

Traditional

Takes into account the styles that were popular in a region or area. Its characteristics include a commitment to maintaining a link to the past styles of building, reuse of materials or designing homes and building to stay consistent with the overall building design of the area. This includes classical styles like Roman, Greek, Gothic, Renaissance etc. Indian vernacular style can also be very much part of the Traditional style.

Contemporary

It includes different styles, from postmodernism and high-tech architecture to highly conceptual and expressive styles, resembling sculpture on an enormous scale. Uses of very advanced technology and modern building materials. Some features are concrete structures wrapped in glass or aluminium screens, very asymmetric facades, and cantilevered sections which hang over the street. Skyscrapers twist, or break into crystal-like facets. Facades are designed to shimmer or change colour at different times of the day.

Modern

It’s a new architectural style based on the “rational” use of modern materials, the principles of functionalist planning, and the rejection of historical precedent and ornament. It emphasizes on form rather than decoration; structure and materials rather than picturesque constructions.
